AUCTION : 1018

Lot#: 938

DESCRIPTION: Unknown, Massachusetts, 8 day, time and strike weight-driven brass movement Mass. shelf clock.
CONDITION: It is hard to date this nicely made large mahogany and cherry shelf clock in an old finish. We feel it might be a centennial piece, c. 1875, but perhaps earlier or later. The reeded quarter columns have stop fluting on the top and bottom of the column. It is interesting that the piece just below the hood door is a copy of the same piece used on the Willard wall timepiece. The hood top looks more like a bottom bracket to a wall clock than a top piece. The brass movement is unusual for the design of the brass plates and the unusual way the verge is connected to the pendulum. the crutch wire comes down between the plates and extends out the back rather emerging at the top of the rear plate. The dial has age darkened and with some scattered stains. Overall a very interesting clock.
